Mountains and Four Hours of Bliss with Guns

I don't know if anyone else has this issue but I am dominantly a right hand shooter who is left eye dominant.  Normally this doesn't pose a problem for me when shooting and most of the time I usually just keep both eyes open but today I learned my right eye is completely retarded and I, for the life of me, cannot focus my right eye with a scope so when I shoot rifles with scopes, I do have to shoot left handed, which is awkward with right hand rifles.  I'm thinking when I get around to buying my own rifles that I might just consider buying left hand ones.

Today was completely blissfully wonderful but then again what day isn't when it involves shooting guns and being in the mountains.  Today I shot, of course the .45 but new to me was the AK47 and 98 Mauser rifle and not new to me was the .22LR Rifle and the AR15 (I love the AR15, it just brings the biggest smile to my face) and I think that's all we shot today.  As for high capacity mags, it certainly is nice not to have to reload all the time and I can continue the fun.

I'm just so happy, a day of shooting and now I'm home and just relaxing.  Pictures and videos:

I love this gun!

And the AK47

And I guess none of the videos are going to upload so I'll just post links:

Ignore the sloppy wracking, I was working left hand on a right hand gun.

  1. I'm left handed and right eye dominant. It didn't cause me much trouble but I've been shooting a little while longer

    1. Maybe my right eye is just retarded. When I look through the scope with my left eye, I immediately see the crosshairs but with my right eye, I would look through and see just black and after a few minutes I would get a minimal view of something but a deep breath and I would lose it.

So I'm thinking, after you said you didn't have much problems that maybe it's just me and I'll go see if I can read up on looking through scopes or maybe there is just something wrong with my right peeper, lol. At least I can function with my left eye. I've thought about just buying a scope and practice looking through it.

  2. There's no reason to NOT shoot long guns left handed; especially since that's your dominant eye. You're still new enough to shooting long guns, that it's probably still fairly awkward, so you might as well learn to do it with your non-dominant side/hand. In reality, ALL shooters should be able to shoot ambidextrously.

I don't think there's anything wrong with your right eye; the gun's not yours and the scope's not yours, so the eye relief is not correct for you, that's all. I have trouble with the eye relief (that whole seeing black thing) on certain guns, no matter which eye I use. Once you get your own long gun, you can have your scope placed *exactly* where you want it and you'll be able to see.

Or you might just consider shooting with open sights. That's what I do most of the time - I only use a scope out past 200 yds.

    1. That makes sense because I know I sit there and play with the scopes on display at Sportsman's Warehouse and I usually don't have problems with them.

I so can't wait to own my own long gun, I'm thinking that's what I'm going to use my Christmas bonus check for. I might have to hit you up on pointers on purchasing one.

  3. You beat me to it GunDiva. It's probably just the scope (way it's mounted or a scope that is less forgiving in eye relief).

Leaning to shoot with both hands is a very important thing to do though. I'm a hunter and try my best to position my stands where I have the best available shots left handed but still am able to shoot right handed when the need arises. Looking at it from a tactical/defensive point of view is that sometimes the best cover will force you to take weakside shots or expose yourself. So either way it's important to practice it

    1. I totally agree that it's good to learn to shoot with both hands because you just never know what might happen in a situation where you might not be able to use your dominant hand, I think that's why in February I started training my left hand, well it was that and I shot for over six hours straight and my right hand was a bit tired, lol.

  4. I agree with GunDiva that if you are new to long guns, you might as well learn to shoot left-handed. There are plenty of models that will accommodate that. Conversely, I am left-handed but shoot right-handed because I am right eye-dominant. I just learned that way and never gave it a thought.

    1. Do you think you will ever teach yourself to shoot left handed? I've been working on shooting pistols with my left hand, it's not as awkward any more but I definitely need to strengthen it up.

I'll probably try learning both left and right on long guns so far both seem comfortable. The one night thing about switching it up at least with recoil is that when one shoulder gets tired, switch it up, lol.

    2. Side note: I think it's nice to meet someone who is dominate hand isn't their dominate eye.
